Who are you?
I'm a 62-year-old father of three and grandfather of one. I am a recently retired UPS driver, a position I held for thirty-five years. While I love retired life, it has not translated into the advancement of my running life as I had hoped.
Why write a blog?
I have a love for both running and reading, and I have come to these loves at a later stage in my life. A blog seems like a natural extension of both of these loves. I'm also thinking that if I do commit myself to a goal, having a blog will not let me slack off in trying to achieve that goal; public fear of failure is a great motivator.
How long have you been running?
I started running in March of 2014, my first race was a 5k in May of t t year. I finished dead last in my age group with a time of 30:42.
Do you belong to a running club?
No. I cosidered looking into this when I was still working, but due to my hours, I thought it could only be feasible when I retired. Now that I am retired, my overall lack of fitness would make any benefits to joining a club useless. If my fitness improved, or if I could find a niche club that is tailored to my needs, I would look into it.
I do belong to an over sixty Facebook group for runners, but I rarely post.
Do you have a running buddy, or do you ever run with someone else?
I can honestly say that I have never gone for a run with anyone else. I love the solitude and do not want to be anyone's "anchor." Finding someone with my schedule would also be difficult. I also like to run at different paces and have been known to improvise running routes so I would imagine I would be a difficult partner.
What do you use for shoes and equipment?
I have retired three pairs of shoes; they have all been different brands. I am fairly loyal to Brooks for my running shoes, I am currently running in a pair of Brooks Ghost 14's, and I would recommend them highly. They are extremely comfortable and are great for both training and racing. I use a Garmin Forerunner 225 to track my runs; more on my tech geekyness later. I use mostly Nike and Underarmour for training clothes.
How did you gain more knowledge about running in general?
I would say it was about 50% reading about various aspects of running (magazines, books, and blogs) and about 50% trial and error. I still have plenty to learn, and I hope to gain some knowledge from this blog.
Do you ever use a treadmill?
Yes, although lately I have stuck to running outside My treadmill is not of very high quality, so much so that it is becoming dangerous to do anything but walk on. I don't really mind using a treadmill as much as other runners.
I am toying with the idea of breaking down and getting a nice treadmill, or joining a gym and running there. We will see how it goes.
Do you ever do speedwork or cross-train?
I have never done any speedwork. I do have a bike trainer and a Zwift account, I do like taking rides in the worlds of Zwift, but I do prefer running.
